THE DIRECTORS.
Doreen Stoneham, a Director of Oxford
Authentication, graduated in physics from Bristol
University. She performed authenticity testing at
the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History
of Art, Oxford University, for 27 years before forming
her own company, Oxford Authentication Ltd, in 1997.
Her work has included major collections in museums,
as well as for international foundations and private
collectors. In all, she has tested well over 50,000
objects, and is probably the most experienced person
in this field worldwide. It was Doreen who perfected
the technique for the safe and reliable testing of
porcelain. Her many papers and articles range from
authenticity testing to scientific research papers
on thermoluminescence. She has appeared on radio and
television and lectured extensively. Her wide experience
is internationally recognised, for instance through
her being an expert witness in both British and American
courts of justice.
Marshall Stoneham is a Director of Oxford
Authentication Ltd. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society,
and also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, the Institute
of Physics, the Institute of Materials, and the American

College, Oxford. Marshall is Massey Professor of Physics
at University College London, where he also directs the
inter-departmental Centre for Materials Research. For much
of his career, he was at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment,
Harwell, becoming a Group Leader, then Division Head of
Materials Physics and Metallurgy Division, then Director
of Research for AEA Industrial Technology. From 1993-1997
he was Chief Scientist of AEA Technology. When he was a
Director of Institute of Physics Publishing (1987-2001),
IoPP won two Queen's Awards for Exports. Marshall has published
a number of books (his Theory of Defects in Solids is now
an Oxford Classic) and over 400 research papers, including
those on the basic science underlying the applied science
of authentication.
