(i) New models from old parts

The seemingly 8th century BC goat is made from an assemblage of unrelated ancient pottery and covered with a slip to disguise the joins. All the TL samples tested genuine. The deception was revealed when the restorer soaked the object prior to conservation and it fell apart into separate pieces.

(ii) Genuine object in thousands of pieces

deer rhyton

deer after soaking

Every part of this 8th century BC Iranian deer rhyton was authentic. It had been patiently assembled before covering in slip to hide the joins. The restoration came to light after soaking overnight in water.
