Insertions of genuine sections into an otherwise completely modern piece. With glazed pieces in particular, the forger knows that the piece will be sampled in an unglazed part of the object rather than the glazed part. The sampler is seduced into sampling the only genuine parts of the whole piece. Horse - insertions
The horse is a modern copy of a Tang horse. Sampling normally takes place in an unglazed area of the body, in this case the base and firing hole. Both of these had fragments of ancient pottery inserted and acrylic paint applied to disguise the join. Further samples were taken from the glazed area of the horse and all parts (shown with red dots) were modern.
